NHSC Scholarship Program Overview

The National Health Service Corps (NHSC) Scholarship Program awards scholarships to students pursuing an eligible training or degree program for a primary care health profession.

In return, scholars commit to provide primary care health services in communities in need. We use Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) to identify those communities.

How long will I have to serve?

You commit to a minimum two years (and four years maximum) of full-time service.

You must serve at an NHSC-approved site in a HPSA. The total number of years you serve depends on the number of school years of NHSC Scholarship support you receive. (The funding cannot exceed four school years.)

What are the benefits of becoming an NHSC scholar?

Service

You will join thousands of current and former NHSC clinicians who provide primary health care services to communities in need.

Payment of educational expenses

We provide financial support for full-time enrollment in an eligible degree or training program for primary care health professions for up to four school years:

  • Payment of tuition and eligible fees
  • An annual payment for other reasonable educational costs (PDF - 310 KB)
  • Monthly stipends to assist with living expenses while pursuing your degree or educational training program for a health professions degree

Note: You will not receive financial support during postgraduate training.

NHSC Loan Repayment Program eligibility

You may be eligible to apply to the NHSC Loan Repayment Program after you complete your NHSC Scholarship service commitment.
