Corps Community Day
Save The Date: Corps Community Day 2013!
Thursday, October 10, 2013
Seeking an opportunity to partner with organizations in your community, inspire young health care providers, or host an engaging event? Team up with the National Health Service Corps as we celebrate our third annual Corps Community Day!
Corps Community Day will take place on Thursday, October 10, 2013, during the American Medical Student Association’s (AMSA) National Primary Care Week (October 7-11, 2013). Corps Community Day celebrates the important work of the Corps to increase access to primary care where it is needed most.
Last year, more than 145 events and activities took place on Corps Community Day, including a national event with U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius hosted at Unity Health Care in Washington, DC. To watch highlights from the Secretary’s event, click on the video below. With your help, in 2013, we hope to exceed our record!
If you’re interested in planning an event this year, email CorpsCommunityDay@hrsa.gov to find out how you can get involved in Corps Community Day 2013!
How will you participate this year? Here are a couple ideas to get you started.
As you plan activities for Corps Community Day 2013, team up with NHSC members and partners to pool resources. Connect with your local:
Educate Local Students
Share your knowledge about the NHSC with college, nursing, medical, dental and/or behavioral health students in your area.
Host a presentation about the National Health Service Corps at a college and/or health professional school in your community. Connect with school administrators to schedule a time to present to students on Corps Community Day. During your presentation, share about your journey that led you to a career in primary care and the NHSC.
Educate health professional students about the Corps. Do you have a friend, relative or neighbor thinking of pursuing a career in primary care? Tell them about the National Health Service Corps! Consider sending them NHSC At-A-Glance Fact Sheet (PDF - 161 KB) and directing them to the NHSC Facebook page.
Host an NHSC site tour for local students interested in pursuing a health professional career in primary care. Open your doors on Corps Community Day for local students to get a glimpse into a career in primary care in a medically underserved community.
Post the Corps Community Day Web badge to your school or organization’s Web site and Facebook page to spread the word about the Corps and all the primary care focused activities happening during National Primary Care Week.
Host a Community Event
Increase awareness of the Corps in your community by coordinating one of the following activities:
Organize a family health walk around your community. Encourage walkers to wear blue and yellow in recognition of Corps Community Day, take some photos and email them to CorpsCommunityDay@hrsa.gov. Consider scheduling the walk for the morning of Corps Community Day, before everyone heads off to work or school.
Hold a health fair to provide screenings, flu vaccinations and/or educational materials.
Organize a toiletries drive at your school, office or site in honor of Corps Community Day. Promote proper hygiene by donating toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss, soap, shampoo and other supplies to a local homeless shelter.
